Citywide solutions to land and housing problems to excluded and marginalised communities in Dhaka

Background:

Housing should be an indispensable instrument in both maintaining and supporting the rapidly growing economy of Bangladesh. While sectors like infrastructure, industry, and connectivity enjoy prioritized attention, housing is often overlooked by both policymakers and implementation agencies. We believe that housing is a basic human right and imperative for the steady development of the country. It deserves a much larger, thoughtful and creative process that can only be achieved through collective and innovative interventions in the urban housing sector.

The rapid urbanization of Bangladesh has resulted in urban housing shortfall on a large scale. One of the core reasons for this crisis is the ignorance towards housing as an asset and form of permanent security, especially for lower and lower-middle-income people.

In order to work on these issues, POCAA, Grambangla Unnayan Committee and CCA has started implementing this project so that the poor, excluded and marginalized people can have the opportunity of healthy housing.

Main objective of the project:

The main objective is to co-create a dignified housing model, which centers on human needs, especially the physical and mental wellbeing, safety and belongingness for the marginalized group of people in Dhaka city by taking lessons from similar projects across the Global South, such as the Jhenaidah city-wide networking project in Bangladesh, Baan Mankong program in Thailand, etc.
