National Seminar & Launching Ceremony of “Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers’ Project”:

On Wednesday 24 February 2016, the National Seminar & Launching Ceremony of the Project - Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers supported by ChildHope UK/ Big Lottery Fund was held at CIRDAP Auditorium to make people aware of the actual condition of waste pickers of Matuail dump site of Dhaka and to share the objective of the project with the potential stakeholders.
About 150 representatives of parliament, government organizations, national and international NGOs, service club organizations, electronic and print media, academics and the waste picker community participated the event.
Adv. Fazilatunnesa Bappy, Honorable Member, Bangladesh National Parliament was present as the Chief Guest of the event. In her speech, she said,

“We want to see a dream that all the children are going to school by leaving waste picking”

Besides her, Seayda Roksana Islam Chameli, Ward Councillor for Ward-13, 19 and 20, Ms. Jill Healey, Executive Director, ChildHope UK, Mr. Amit Arulanantham, Partnerships and Programmes Manager, ChildHope UK, Mr. Imtiaj Rasul, Vice-Chairperson, GUC Ms. Shaheen Akter Dolly, Executive Director, Nari Maitree and Mr. Mozammel Hoque was present as the Special Guests.

A K M Maksud, Project Manager and the Executive Director, Grambangla Unnayan Committee presented a brief presentation on the project.

"Orientation/ Refresher Programs"

Orientation Program of Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers’ Project:

On 1st July and 2nd July 2015, a two days Orientation Workshop for the project staff of “Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers’ Project, supported by ChildHope UK/ Big Lottery Fund was held at the Head Office of GrambanglaUnnayan Committee. All the project staff from GrambanglaUnnayan Committee (GUC), NariMaitree (NM) and NagorikUddyog (NU) took part in that event. Professor H K S Arefeen, Former Chairman, Dept. of Anthropology, University of Dhaka and Chief Advisor, GUC was the Chief Guest of the event and Mr. MozammelHoque facilitated the sessions. Moreover, Zakir Hossain, CEO, NU; ShaheenAkter Dolly, ED, NM; Mr. A K M Maksud, ED, GUC and ImtiajRasul, Vice Chairperson, GUC were also present at the event.

The program was designed to make all the project staff understand the objectives, outcomes, activities, outputs and deliverables of the project. The purpose of that event was to build strong working relationship among the implementing Partners which will ensure better coordination.

Orientation and training to community facilitators on the project and job responsibilities:

To make the CommunityFacilitators familiar with objectives of “Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers’ Project supported by ChildHope UK/ Big Lottery Fund and their scope of work, an orientation, and training session was organized at Matuail project office on 17 September 2015 at 10.00 AM.

Adv. Aleya Begum, Program Officer (Training), NagorikUddyog and ASM Sadiqur Rahman, Advocacy and Networking Officer facilitated the orientation program. Five community facilitators were present at the orientation.

"Trainings, Workshops and Exposure Visits"

Training Workshop on Communication, Facilitation & Documentation:

From 27 to 29 July 2015, a three-day “Training Workshop on Communication, Facilitation, and Documentation” was held at YWCA, Iqbal Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Ms. Rajni S Shivakotee was the facilitator of the event and all the project staff participated in the session.

Training Workshop on Child Protection:

The “Training Workshop on Child Protection” was held on 8th September 2015 at YWCA, Iqbal Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Participants fromGrambanglaUnnayan Committee, NariMaitree, NagorikUddyog, and LEEDOwere present in the workshop. A K M Maksud and Joyeeta Hossain facilitated the workshop to increase participants’ confidence in protecting children from abusing, negligence and exploitation
Training of Teachers on Inclusive Education, Health Education and Hygiene & Methods for Assessing Needs of Children with Disabilities:

From 7th November 2015, the Six day training of six primary school teachers was started. The objective of the training was developing skills of teachers on inclusive education, health education and methods for assessing needs of children with disabilities. In this regard, six primary school teachers of Grambangla School went for the exposure visits to MatuailPoshchim Para Government Primary School and National Centre for Special Education. After the exposure visits, they received training on Teaching Method and ECD, Inclusive Education & Disability and on Education Program Management & Monitoring. The research persons from Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) and Centre for Services and Information on Disability (CSID) facilitated the training sessions.

Training Workshop on Development approaches, intervention models and Project monitoring and reporting:

From 8 to 10 December 2015, a three day “Training Workshop on Development approaches, intervention models and Project monitoring and reporting” was held at Training Room, SPED-RRTC, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Mr. KhileshChaturvediwas the facilitator of the event and all the project staff participated in the session.
Training Workshop on Health & Nutrition:

From 6 to 7 February 2016 the “Training Workshop on Health & Nutrition” was held at Training Room, SPED-RRTC, Mohammadpur, Dhaka for the project staff. Mr. Swapan Saha played the role of the facilitator.
Training Workshop on Monitoring:

On 22 February 2016, the “Training Workshop on Monitoring” was organized at Training room, CBCB, Asad Avenue, Asadgate, Dhaka. Mr. Amit Arulananthamand Mr. MozammelHoque played the role of facilitator and co-facilitator of the event and all the project staff participated in the session.
Training Workshop on Monitoring:

ChildHope, UK/ Big Lottery Fund arranged a 8 days training and exposure visit program (24 – 31 March 2016) under the “Healthy Futures for Child Waste Pickers” Project for the project team of “Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers”. In this regard, 5 members of GrambanglaUnnayan Committee visited three renowned NGOs named Arpana Research & Charities Trust at Haryana, LaxmiSansthanat Ghaziabad and Butterfly at Delhi in India.

The main purpose of the exposure visit was to build up the capacity of the team members by learning from the experience of others outside an own community, by direct interaction.There the team members visited some Self Help Groups, observed different right based approach and advocacy initiatives and gathered knowledge about of Child Development Khazana.

A K M Maksud, Executive Director and A B K Reza, Advocacy & Networking Manager of GrambanglaUnnayan Committee met with Ms. AlkaLamba, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Delhi Legislative Assembly from ChandniChowk constituency from AamAadmi Party.
Participatory Workshop on Developing Concept Notes on Urban Informal Sector Workers & CSR Proposals and Communications:

On 9 – 10 January 2017, Grambangla Unnayan Committee organized a Participatory Workshop on Developing Concept Notes on Urban Informal Sector Workers &CSR Proposals and Communications at Training Room, SPED-RRTC, Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
Ms. Sian Arulanantham was the Facilitator and Mr. Amit Arulanantham and Mr. Mozammel Hoque were the Co-Facilitators of the sessions. The core staff of Grambangla Unnayan Committee was the participants of the workshop.

Follow-up Training Workshop on Self-Help Group and Advocacy:


From 12-16 February 2017, the “Follow-up Training Workshop on Self-Help Group and Advocacy” was held at Training room, CBCB, Asad Avenue, Asad gate, Dhaka. Mr. Khilesh Chaturvedi was the facilitator of the event and all the project staff participated in the session. The main objective of the course was to revisit and improve the understanding level and build a capacity of Project Staffs on Self Help Group (SHG) model; Concept of Facilitation and role of facilitator in developing SHGs; People led Advocacy and Monitoring of project progress and reporting.

"Meetings"

Networking Meeting:

With the support of ChildHope UK/ Big Lottery Fund, Grambangla Unnayan Committee has taken an initiative to establish a network for the wellbeing of waste picker community. In this regard, on 26 April 2016 Grambangla Unnayan Committee organized a preliminary meeting at Mohammadpur Fertility Service & Training Center, Mohammadpur Dhaka. The purpose of the meeting was to share the waste pickers’ issues and to identify opportunities for collective action. Representatives of 34 NGOs including UNICEF were present there and made their valuable comments on the regarding the issue.
Mr. A K M Maksud, Executive Director of Grambangla Unnayan Committee chaired the session. Ms. SaymaSayed, Monitoring Officer and Mr. A B K Reza, Advocacy Manager presented their presentations on the situation and what to do.

On 14 December 2016 “Network of Waste Pickers in Bangladesh” was established. A K M Maksud (Executive Director, GrambanglaUnnayan Committee), ShaheenAkter Dolly (Executive Director, NariMaitree), S. M. MahediHasan (Director, Life Center), Mr. Khairuzzaman Kamal, (General Secretary, Bangladesh ManobadhikarShangbadik Forum) Marium and Rina, (representatives of Association of Waste Pickers of Bangladesh and the Self Help Group of waste pickers of Matuail dump site area)were elected the Executive Board members of the network.

"Community Programs and Humanitarian Activities"

Discussion Meeting on Health, Education and Hygiene of Student Waste Pickers:

The discussion meeting of Health, Education, and Hygiene of Student Waste Pickers was organized on 02 September 2015 at project office at Matuail dump site area under “Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers’ Project”. The Purpose of the meeting was to raise awareness among the waste picking students of Grambangla School about Health, Education, and Hygiene. Mr. Zearul Islam, Deputy Director (Retd.) DGFP facilitated the session. 22 students of Grambangla School took active part in the discussions.

Discussion on Health, Hygiene, Sanitation, Nutrition, Reproductive Health & Child Care of the Parent Waste Pickers:

On 26 August 2015 the Discussion on Health, Hygiene, Sanitation, Nutrition, Reproductive Health and Child Care of the Parent Waste Pickers was held at Matuail Project Office under the project- “Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers”. A total of 28 waste picker women attended the meeting. Ms. Aklima Begum, Trainer, GUC played the role of facilitator.

First National Congress of Association of Waste Pickers of Bangladesh:

On 28th August 2015, the First National Congress of Association of Waste Pickers of Bangladesh was arranged at Matuail Dump Site area in front of Grambangla School. About 300 children, women, and men waste pickers participated the congress; among them, 147 were women waste pickers. In the event, the waste pickers talked about different issues related to their health, education, housing, water, and sanitation etc. In that platform, they raised their voice for their rights.

Second National Congress of Association of Waste Pickers of Bangladesh:

In February 2017 the association organized their second national congress at Matuail, Demra, Dhaka. Eminent labor right leader and President of the Bangladesh Trade Union Centre (BTUC) Mr. Shahidullah Chowdhury attended in the congress as Chief Guest. More than 200 waste pickers women and children attended in the congress and shared their own experiences.
Annual Sport’s Day of Grambangla School: 31 January 2016:

The Annual Sport’s Day of Grambangla School was held on a sunny Sunday on 31st January 2016 at the Mridhabari Ground near the waste dump site of Matuail in Dhaka. The waste picker students, parents, adolescents and representatives from the local business community took part in the event.

Al-Hajj Nasir Uddin Mia, Chairman, Matuail, Union Parishadwas present as the Chief Guest of the event. Annual Sport’s Program of Grambangla School, 2017

On 23rd February 2017 the Annual Sport’s program for the waste picking children of Grambangla School was organized at Mridhabari open ground. A total 316 students, adolescent trainees of Grambangla Technical Training Center, parents and members of Self Help Groups of waste picking women participated in 15 different events.

Al Hajj Nasir Uddin Mia, Chairman, Matuail, Union Parishad was present as the Chief Guest of the event. After the sports events, the cultural program was held where the waste picking children and adolescents took part. At end of the program, the Chief Guest distributed prize among the winners of the sports and cultural events and among the students of different classes of Grambangla School who secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd position in the Annual Exam of 2016.

"Campaign"

Media Advocacy Campaign on Health & Education Situation of Child Waste Pickers in Bangladesh:

In order to sensitize the journalists of print, electronic and online media about the health, education, life and livelihood situation of the child waste pickers, GrambanglaUnnayan Committee (GUC) and Bangladesh ManobadhikarSangbadik Forum (BMSF) jointly organized a Media Advocacy Campaign on “Health & Education Situation of Child Waste Pickers in Bangladesh” at Dhaka Reporters Unity, Dhaka, Bangladesh on 22 December 2016. The event was organized under the project- Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers; supported by ChildHope UK/ Big Lottery Fund. A total 62 participants i.e. waste pickers, journalists and representatives of NGOs attended the event.Mr. Khairuzzaman Kamal, General Secretary, BMSF played the role of Chair and Facilitator of the event and Mr. A K M Maksud, Executive Director, GUC was the Key Paper Presenter. Renowned journalists like SaleemSamad (Asian Age), Khairuzzaman Kamal (BSS), Deepak Acharja (The Independent) andShahnaz Poly (Daily Inqilab) participated the Media Advocacy Campaign and gave their valuable recommendations. After the event, the journalists visited Matuail dump site area to observe the real scenario of waste pickers by themselves and total 14 national newspapers published articles on different issues of waste pickers.

"Rallies and Human Chain"

Observation of World AIDS Day:

On 1 December 2016, STI/ AIDS Network of Bangladesh organized a rally to observe the “World AIDS Day”. In 2016, the theme was “Hands Up for #HIV Prevention”. About 500 people from different sectors and economic classes joined the rally. The waste pickers of Matuail dump site also participated in the rally to establish their rights to health. The rally started from Press Club and ended at Osmani Smriti Milon Ayoton holding various placard and festoons.

Observation of Human Rights Day 2016 and Human Rights Education Training for the Community Youth Volunteers:

Every year Human Rights Day comes to us with a new and specific theme. This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to Stand Up for Someone's Rights! This year, Gram Bangla Unnayan Committee observed the day with conducting Rally, human chain, discussion meetings on human rights issues, human rights education training program for the youth community volunteers and a special event on `Human Rights Dignity Torch’ in organization’s working areas in Matuail, Dhaka, and Nalchity of Jhalokathi district.

In Matuail, around 350 people including women and children of Waste Picker’s community participated in the rally. The rally started from Grambangla School and ended at the same place after moving through different roads and lanes of the community holding various placard and festoons demanding their basic rights and establishing dignity at the workplace and community.

To celebrate human rights day in Nalchityupazila of Jhalokathi district, more than 150 people including government officials, local government representative, NGOs, students and youth volunteers participated in the human rights rally, discussion meetings, training program for the youth community volunteers and a special event on `Human Rights Dignity Torch’. UpazilaNirbahi Officer (government’s Chief Executive Officer at sub-district level) and hon’ble Mayor of Nalchityupazila participated in the event.

"External Visits"

Visit of Shaheen Akter Doly, Executive Director, Nari Maitree:

22 December 2015 Shaheen Akter Doly, Executive Director, Nari Maitree visited Grambangla Technical Training Center to observe the training situation and progress. A K M Maksud cordially welcomed her with the bouquet. Ms. Shaheen Akter Doly talked with the adolescent trainees and the trainers about the environment, lesson plan, and progress.

Visit of Jill Healey, ‎Executive Director, ChildHope UK:

On 22 February 2016 Jill Healey, ‎Executive Director, ChildHope UK visited Matuail dump site area to observe the activities of Education and Health for Child Waste Pickers’ Project. During her visit, she went to Grambangla School, Grambangla Technical Training Center; there she saw the project activities and talked with the students and trainees. She also talked with the parents of the students and the members of Self Help Groups of waste picking women. At that time, she distributed Birth Certificates among the students. Besides that, she distributed assistive devices among the People with Disabilities with the support of Nari Maitree and German Embassy.

Visit of Ms. Sian Arulanantham, Head of Programmes Coordination, the Leprosy Mission, England and Wales

Ms. Sian Arulanantham visited Grambangla School and Grambangla Technical Training Center on 8 January 2017. During her visit, she talked with the students and trainees and Grambangla staff to know about the activities. She distributed prize among the students who passed “Primary School Certificate Exam” (PSC) in 2016 successfully. At the end of her visit, she wished all the very best to the team of Education and Health for Child Waste Picker’s Project.

"Survey "

House Hold Survey of Waste Pickers at Matuail Dump Site Area:

From 23 August 2015 a survey team of 4 members consisting started to conduct a Household Survey of Waste Pickers at Matuail Dump Site Area. GrambanglaUnnayan Committee directly guided the survey work. So far, household data from 500 waste picking families has been collected.
